# Bosch oven door locked shut

### The fastest diagnosis is the code

There is a published code for the door lock specifically. If you have it, the mechanism rather than the temperature is the problem — but even then, letting the oven go completely cold first costs nothing and releases a good share of them.

### Why this has its own page

It is the most predictable oven repair there is, because it fails at a specific moment: the end of a cycle that has just taken the cavity far above any temperature it sees in normal use. The manufacturer publishes a code for the door lock alone, which tells you how commonly it happens.

### Patience first

The lock is designed not to release while the oven is hot. After self-clean the cavity takes hours to come down, and a great many “stuck” doors open on their own once it has. Waiting is free; levering is not.

The cavity is still hot

The lock will not release above a threshold, by design. Several hours, not one — and people almost always judge it too early.

The lock motor or its cam

Stuck part way. This is the published code and it is a real repair, though a modest one.

The lock switch

The mechanism has moved but the control does not believe it, so it keeps the door held. Same symptom, different part.

A cycle that was interrupted

Power cut mid self-clean, or the oven switched off at the breaker during one. Restarting and cancelling the cycle properly often clears it.

Debris in the latch path

Rare, and usually after a very heavy clean cycle. It needs the mechanism opened rather than forced.

Cancel the cycle and wait

Genuinely several hours. This is the single most effective thing on the page and it costs nothing but patience.

Try starting and cancelling self-clean

Which makes the lock run through its full travel. Often enough to free a mechanism that stopped part way.

Cut power for five minutes

Then try again once it is cold. Photograph any code before you do.

Do not lever at it

The latch is motorised. Forcing it turns a modest repair into a door, a hinge and sometimes a control board.

After a self-clean cycle

What it usually means

Locked since a self-clean cycle

Lock icon showing with the oven cold

A grinding noise from the lock
