Symptom
Bosch washer will not start
A machine that does nothing, or one that lights up and never fills. The door lock and the water supply account for most of it, and both are worth a minute before booking.

Five ordinary causes
What this usually turns out to be
Cheapest and commonest first, which is also the order we check them in. They sit hundreds of dollars apart, and only the unit settles which one is yours.
-
The door is not shut properly
It has to click. A full load pressing against it, or something caught between the door and the seal, will stop it — and there is a code that says exactly this.
-
The door lock
Closes but does not report locked. The machine will not fill without that confirmation, which is sensible.
Door seal & hinge repair from $135 -
Water not arriving
Tap closed, inlet filter blocked, hose kinked, or genuinely low pressure. Blocked inlet filters are common in this city's water.

Power
The breaker, or a socket in a closet that shares a circuit with something else. A machine with no lights at all is power until proven otherwise.
-
Child lock or delay start
Both are easy to set by accident and both look exactly like a dead machine.
In five minutes
Before you call anybody
None of it needs tools, and all of it makes the visit shorter.
-
01
Close the door hard enough to click
And check nothing is caught in the seal. A sleeve in the door is enough.
-
02
Check the tap and the inlet screen
The tap fully open, the hose unkinked. The filter screen in the inlet fitting can be cleaned with a small brush.
-
03
Cut power for five minutes
Genuinely off at the breaker. It clears a surprising number, especially after a power cut.
-
04
Look for a lock or a timer
Child lock, or a delay start left on from last week.
How it shows up
What people describe when they call
Two shortcuts
Narrow it down before anybody arrives
A description of the behaviour leaves a few possible causes. A code names the subsystem, and the model number says which parts to bring. Either one shortens the visit; both together usually settle it.

About Bosch washer will not start
The fastest diagnosis is the code
There are separate published codes for "the door is not locked" and "water is not arriving", and they are the two commonest reasons a cycle never begins. Photograph whichever one is showing — it saves the first half of the diagnosis.
The two published reasons
These machines have separate codes for a door that is not locked and for water that is not arriving, and between them those are most of these calls. That is unusually specific, and it means a photograph of the display genuinely does half the diagnosis before anybody drives out.
Inlet screens
There is a fine mesh filter in the inlet fitting where the hose meets the machine, and in a hard-water city it blocks. It can be cleaned with a small brush in a few minutes with the tap off, and it is the sort of thing nobody thinks to look at.

Questions about bosch washer will not start
It fills but the drum does not turn.
Different problem, and worth saying separately — that is the drive side rather than the start-up side, and the machine usually has a code for it.
Only the cold water arrives.
Check the hot tap and the hot inlet screen. On the models with a hot fill there is a published code and a water tap icon for exactly this.
It worked yesterday and today it is dead.
Breaker first, then five minutes genuinely off at the breaker. If neither helps and there is no code, it is worth a visit.
