Symptom

Bosch dryer will not start

A dryer that does nothing, or one that stops immediately. On a condensation machine there is one cause that does not exist on other dryers: a condensate tank that is full and has not been emptied.

  • From $95 diagnostic, credited to the repair
  • 59 cities and neighborhoods covered
  • OEM parts available on order
  • In writing the price, before anything is opened

Five ordinary causes

What this usually turns out to be

Cheapest and commonest first, which is also the order we check them in. They sit hundreds of dollars apart, and only the unit settles which one is yours.

  • The condensate tank is full

On models that collect rather than drain. The machine stops and will not restart until it is emptied, and plenty of owners have never known the tank exists.

  • The door is not latched

It has to click. On a stacked pair the door swings against a narrow closet wall and does not always close fully.

Door seal & hinge repair from $135
  • Power

The breaker, or a shared circuit in a laundry closet. A machine with no lights at all is power until proven otherwise.

  • Electronics after an outage

Storm season here produces a run of these. Several clear with five minutes genuinely unplugged.

    Control board replacement from $310
  • Child lock or delay start

Set by accident, and indistinguishable from a dead machine until you know to look.

In five minutes

Before you call anybody

None of it needs tools, and all of it makes the visit shorter.

  1. 01

    Empty the condensate tank

Usually a drawer at the top or bottom front. If your machine drains to a hose instead, check the hose is not kinked.

  2. 02

Close the door until it clicks

And check the filter flap is fully closed too — on some models that stops the machine as well.

  3. 03

    Unplug for five minutes

Genuinely unplugged, not standby. This clears a good share of the electronics codes.

  4. 04

Check the breaker and any lock

Then photograph the code if one is showing and book.

How it shows up

What people describe when they call

  • “No response at all”
  • “Starts and stops within seconds”
  • “A tank or drain warning showing”
Dark kitchen with wood cabinetry and a black marble splashback under warm strip lighting

Two shortcuts

Narrow it down before anybody arrives

A description of the behaviour leaves a few possible causes. A code names the subsystem, and the model number says which parts to bring. Either one shortens the visit; both together usually settle it.

About Bosch dryer will not start

The fastest diagnosis is the code

The electronics codes on these machines are grouped — several numbers, one published cause. What that tells you is worth knowing: it is not going to be diagnosed from the code alone, and five minutes unplugged is the free thing to try first.

The cause that only exists on these machines

A condensation dryer takes water out of your laundry and has to put it somewhere. On plumbed models it goes to the drain. On the rest it goes into a tank — a drawer at the front — which fills every few loads. When it is full the machine stops and will not restart, and a great many owners have never opened it.

The grouped codes

The manufacturer publishes six numbers under a single cause: the electronics. That is honest, and it tells you the code alone will not narrow it. Five minutes unplugged is the free thing to try; after that it is a proper diagnosis.

Questions about bosch dryer will not start

What tank?

On models that do not drain to a waste pipe, the water they take out of your laundry collects in a removable tank, usually a drawer at the front. It fills every few loads and the machine stops when it is full.

It shows one of a list of numbers.

Those are grouped under one published cause — the electronics. Five minutes unplugged is worth trying; if it returns, it needs looking at properly.

It started right after a storm.

Common here. Try the unplug first. If it does not clear, that timing is worth telling us because surge damage looks different from wear.
