A crack from an impact is one thing; a crack from heat means asking why it got that hot. Fitting new glass over an unresolved cause is fitting it twice.

We find that out before the appointment rather than after, and it is the reason the model number is the first thing we ask for.
Why the figure has such a wide range
An entry-series radiant top and a wide induction top with a bridge zone are not the same piece of glass, and the price reflects that far more than the labor does. The published national ranges reach four figures at the top for exactly this reason.
When it is not worth doing
If the glass plus the labor approaches what the appliance is worth, you will hear that before it is booked rather than after the invoice. On the upper series it rarely does; on the entry series it sometimes does.

It is only a small chip. Can I leave it?
A chip at the edge of a zone, no. Liquid gets under the glass and into the electronics, and the crack grows with every heat cycle. Away from the zones and away from the edge, sometimes — we will tell you honestly which yours is.
Is it cheaper to replace the whole cooktop?
Sometimes, and we will say so. On the entry series the glass plus the labor can approach the price of a new unit. On the upper series it usually does not, and the rest of the appliance is worth keeping.
How did it crack on its own?
Usually it did not. A dropped pan lid, a pot boiled dry, or a heavy pan set down hard on a cold top. Occasionally it is thermal, and then the reason it got that hot is the real question.
