Bosch dishwasher not cleaning properly
Dishes coming out gritty, cloudy or with food still on them. In a hard-water city a good share of this is scale and detergent rather than a failed part — and the machine will eventually tell you so with a code of its own.

Five ordinary causes
What this usually turns out to be
Cheapest and commonest first, which is also the order we check them in. They sit hundreds of dollars apart, and only the unit settles which one is yours.
-
A blocked filter
Food that cannot leave gets redistributed over the load. Twists out by hand and is the first thing to look at.
Dishwasher drain repair from $145 -
Spray arms not turning
Blocked jets, or a tall item on the lower rack stopping the arm. Spin each one by hand with the racks in — they should move freely.
-
Scale in the machine
A white film on glass and a machine that does not rinse well. South Florida water is hard and these machines publish a code for it, which is unusually honest.
Maintenance & descaling from $145 -
Not hot enough
If the water is not reaching temperature, nothing else on the list matters. That points at the heat pump and it is the real repair here.
Dishwasher heating & drying repair from $220 -
Detergent and loading
Tablets that do not dissolve in a short cycle, a blocked dispenser flap, or a load packed tight enough to shield the lower rack.
In five minutes
Before you call anybody
None of it needs tools, and all of it makes the visit shorter.
-
01
Spin both spray arms by hand
With the racks loaded as you normally load them. If a handle or a baking sheet stops one, that is your answer.
-
02
Hold an arm up to the light
Blocked jets show immediately. A toothpick clears them, and the arms usually unclip without tools.
-
03
Look for a white film
On glass in particular. Film is scale; grit is the filter. They are different problems and they look nothing alike once you know.
-
04
Run a hot cycle with a descaler
Empty. If everything improves noticeably, you had scale, and it is worth doing on a schedule from now on.
How it shows up
What people describe when they call
Two shortcuts
Narrow it down before anybody arrives
A description of the behaviour leaves a few possible causes. A code names the subsystem, and the model number says which parts to bring. Either one shortens the visit; both together usually settle it.
If the display is showing something
Photograph it before it clears — codes do not wait. Search the full code list
If there is no code at all

About Bosch dishwasher not cleaning properly
The fastest diagnosis is the code
If the machine has shown a code about scale in the heat pump, start there — descaling is a maintenance job and it is the cheapest thing on this page. Left long enough it becomes the most expensive.
Grit and film are two different problems
Grit — sand-like debris in cups and glasses — is food that could not leave the machine. Filter, spray arms, drainage. Film — a dull white haze on glass — is minerals from the water. Descaling and rinse aid. They arrive together often enough to be confused, and they are fixed by completely different things.
The code worth acting on
These machines publish a code specifically for scale building up in the heat pump. Very few appliances tell you this. Acting on it is a maintenance visit; ignoring it for a year means replacing the heat pump, which is the most expensive part in the machine.

Questions about bosch dishwasher not cleaning properly
Should I pre-rinse everything?
Scrape, do not rinse. These machines detect how dirty the water is and adjust the cycle — a rack of pre-rinsed dishes gets a short, cool cycle, which is the opposite of what a genuinely dirty load needs.
Is the white film permanent?
On glass it eventually is — etching cannot be reversed. Scale on the machine and film on new glassware both come off, so it is worth acting early.
Do I need a water softener?
It helps, and it is a decision about the whole house rather than the dishwasher. Regular descaling gets most of the benefit for the appliance alone.
