Symptom

Bosch range hood not working

A fan that will not run, one stuck on a single speed, lights that have gone, or a hood that sounds healthy and moves nothing. Four different problems, and you can tell them apart from the kitchen floor.

Five ordinary causes

What this usually turns out to be

Cheapest and commonest first, which is also the order we check them in. They sit hundreds of dollars apart, and only the unit settles which one is yours.

  • Filters

A grease filter that has been washed a hundred times, or a charcoal filter on a recirculating hood that nobody knew was a consumable. The most common answer to "no suction".

    Maintenance & descaling from $145
  • The duct and the outside cap

A wall or roof cap with a corroded damper that no longer opens. Near the water this is common, and the hood sounds perfectly healthy while it happens.

    Range hood repair from $125
  • The speed control or switches

A hood stuck on one speed, or one that only works on high. That is the control rather than the motor.

    Range hood repair from $125
  • The motor or its capacitor

A hood that hums without turning is usually the capacitor; one that is silent is usually the motor or its supply.

    Range hood repair from $125
  • The connected pairing with the cooktop

If the hood used to come on by itself and stopped, that is a link between two appliances that has dropped — a setting, not a repair.

In five minutes

Before you call anybody

None of it needs tools, and all of it makes the visit shorter.

  1. 01

Pull the filters out and look at the light

Through them. If you cannot see light through the mesh, that is your suction gone.

  2. 02

Hold a tissue to the hood on full

It should hold there. If it drops immediately, nothing is being pulled and the question is filters or duct.

  3. 03

    Look at the outside cap

From the balcony or the garden if you can reach it. A damper corroded shut is invisible from inside the kitchen.

  4. 04

Check the breaker for the lights

Lights and fan sometimes sit on different circuits, and a hood with one working and not the other is telling you something.

How it shows up

What people describe when they call

  • “Fan does not run at all”
  • “Runs but pulls almost nothing”
  • “Lights out or flickering”

A shortcut

Narrow it down before anybody arrives

A description of the behaviour leaves a few possible causes. A code names the subsystem before anybody opens anything, which is why it is worth photographing before it clears.

About Bosch range hood not working

The fastest diagnosis is the code

There are no error codes on this equipment and none are needed. What the hood is doing — nothing, one speed, no lights, or no suction — is the whole diagnosis.

Four problems you can tell apart yourself

  • Nothing at all: power, or the control
  • Stuck on one speed: the speed control
  • Runs but pulls nothing: filters, then duct, then the outside cap
  • Lights only: lamps or the light circuit, often separate from the fan

The salt-air version

Near the water, the outside end of the duct ages first. A cap with a corroded damper stops opening, and the symptom is not a noise — it is a kitchen that stays smoky behind a hood that sounds completely healthy. Worth checking from outside before anyone opens the hood itself.

Questions about bosch range hood not working

It sounds fine but the kitchen still fills with smoke.

Filters first, then the duct. A long run with two elbows moves a fraction of the rated airflow even when everything works, and a corroded cap moves nothing at all while the fan roars.

Mine does not vent outside.

Then it recirculates, which in a condo is most of them. The charcoal filter is the entire system, it cannot be washed, and once saturated the hood is just moving air around the room.

It used to switch on with the cooktop.

The pairing between them has dropped, usually after a router change or an update. It is a setting and worth trying to re-establish before booking anything.
