Bosch range hoods

Under-cabinet, wall-mounted, island and insert hoods. A hood has a motor, a light, a set of filters and — on the connected models — a link to the cooktop below it, and there are only so many things on that list. Which makes it the one appliance here where the diagnosis is usually quick.

What goes wrong with it

Each one covers the likely causes in the order they are worth checking, and what to do in five minutes before booking anything.

  • A heavy pan sitting on a lit gas ring, seen from above

    Range hood not working

A fan that will not run, one stuck on a single speed, lights that have gone, or a hood that sounds healthy and moves nothing. Four different problems, and you can tell them apart from the kitchen floor.

    • Fan does not run at all
    • Runs but pulls almost nothing
    • Lights out or flickering

What we do on it

Starting figures for this equipment in South Florida. The exact cost is confirmed after an on-site diagnostic — and this is not the whole list of what can go wrong, so call if your problem is not here.

  • An appliance technician kneeling on a kitchen floor, writing up a job on a clipboard beside an open cabinet and a tool box

    Diagnostic visit

We read the code, reproduce what the appliance is doing, and check the cheap causes before anything expensive is proposed. The fee is credited toward the work when you go ahead.

    • Codes read and reproduced on site
    • The inexpensive causes checked first
    • Credited toward the repair

  • Hands lifting the metal grease filter out of a kitchen extractor hood

    Range hood repair

Fan not running, stuck on one speed, lights out, or a hood that pulls almost nothing. The shortest list of possible causes on this site, and usually the shortest visit.

    • Motor, speed control and switches
    • Lighting and its transformer
    • Filters, ducting and the outside cap
    What this involves
  • A hand pouring liquid detergent into the open dispenser drawer of a washing machine
    from $145

    Maintenance & descaling

The visit that stops the other pages happening. In a city with hard water and a lot of heat, descaling a dishwasher and cleaning a condenser are not housekeeping — they are the two cheapest repairs on this site, done early.

    • Dishwasher descaling before it costs the heat pump
    • Condenser and coil cleaning
    • Filters across the whole kitchen and laundry
    What this involves
  • A technician kneeling at a kitchen cabinet run with a cordless drill and an open tool box, a built-in oven beside him
    from $185

    Installation & re-fitting

Fitting a replacement into an opening that was built for something else, stacking a laundry pair, or putting right an installation that has been causing problems since day one. A surprising share of what looks like a broken appliance is an appliance installed badly.

    • Built-in openings, panels and trim
    • Stacked laundry and closet installs
    • Correcting installations that never worked

About Bosch range hoods

A short list of things to be wrong

A hood is a motor, a switch, a light, filters and ducting. There are no error codes on this equipment and it does not need any — a fan that will not run, a fan stuck on one speed, a light that flickers and a hood that moves no air are four different problems you can tell apart from the kitchen floor. It is the fastest diagnosis on this site.

What the salt does

Near the water, the outside end of the duct is the part that ages. A wall cap or a roof cap with a corroded damper stops opening properly, and the first symptom is not a noise but a kitchen that stays smoky with a hood that sounds perfectly healthy. Worth checking from outside before anyone opens the hood.

Ducted, recirculating, and which you have

In a high-rise the answer is very often recirculating, whether or not the person who bought the apartment knows it. That changes the maintenance completely: the charcoal filter is the whole system, it is not washable, and once it is saturated the hood is moving air around the room and doing nothing else.

Questions about bosch range hoods

The fan runs but it barely pulls anything.

Filters first — a grease filter that has been through the dishwasher a hundred times still needs replacing eventually — then the duct. A hood ducted through a long run with two elbows and a wall cap moves a fraction of what its rating suggests, and a cap that has corroded shut moves nothing.

It used to switch on by itself when I turned the cooktop on.

That is the connected pairing between the two appliances, and it drops out — usually after a router change or a firmware update. It is a setting rather than a repair, and it is worth trying before booking anything.

Do you do recirculating hoods?

Yes. In condos where nothing can be ducted through an exterior wall, that is most of them — and a recirculating hood lives or dies on its charcoal filter, which is a consumable people rarely know about.
